Routine and Creativity

Friday through Sunday at Barb's house scrapbooking! Lots of food, fun, laughter, scrappin', sharing and caring! LOVE IT! Life is usually so ordinary - routines are so helpful in making every day life more pleasureable, I think. And then there are the unusual opportunities like this for nothing but fun and creativity. Suits my free spirit - I take to a lack of routine like a fish to water! But I'm happy there is hope for my ordinary life to be more creative when the ordinary routines are routine to me!

Just one Foot in Front of the Other

This morning I was up in time to do all my morning routine chores. It was nice to have a lunch at work, it was nice to know the dishwasher was empty and ready for dishes and the laundry was one step closer to being done. Also, I took salmon out for dinner tonight, so no wondering what to do for dinner. I did think, when I woke up, that I wish I had started the night before so my clothes were laid out and my lunch was made. So, as tired as I was this evening, I laid out my clothes for tomorrow and tidied up the kitchen. My fridge is too full to make lunch before morning so I thought I would wait for that until morning, but as I'm typing this, I realize that's really just an excuse. So, when I finish here I will go and make tomorrow's lunch and find a way to fit it in the fridge. Then I'm going to brush my teeth, wash my face and go to bed at a decent hour. I did walk around the parking lot at first and second breaks today, but that was all the exercise I worked in. I also worked on getting my Sunday School class ready for the first class of the school year.  Before coming home this evening I was thinking, "I'm so tired I'll just get up early rather than do the before bed routine." But, remembering my first thoughts this morning, I forced myself to carry out the routines. And what did I learn? It wasn't that hard - it really was pretty easy - even as tired as I was. Hmmmm....... I'm off to make lunch......

The Beginning

It always seems preposterous and impossible at the beginning of a big project.

So, today is the perfect beginning!

I will be speaking at MOPS on May 13, 2014 on the subject of Home Organization. I will be speaking to young women who have preschoolers. It hasn't been so long that I don't remember those days.....Sally once called those my "Cheerio days".....she came to visit me one day and there were Cheerios spilled out all willy nilly under my kitchen table. She came again several days later (I resist remembering exactly how many days) and the same Cheerios were still under the table!

Its really rather funny when you think about that young Mom ever ever standing in front of other young Moms talking about organization of all things. The worst of it is, while I've come a long way from Cheerios scattered under the table for days on end, there are still days that I might pretend not to hear the doorbell if someone came ringing, for fear they might want to come in and the house isn't fit for visitors, or even friends, or sometimes even family!

I stupidly once told a group of my friends that one day the pastor came by on a hot day and was hoping he could get a drink of water. My hubby and I were out in the front yard, we could hardly pretend we didn't see him coming! So I turned on the hose! I kid you not! It was better than opening the front door! He was so gracious.....I was mortified! I wonder what he thought as he drove away, "Glad I didn't ask to go to the bathroom!" Who does that? For that matter, who tells other people that they did that? I still hear about it to this day, "You sure we can come over? We don't want to drink out of the hose!" "They stopped by without calling first? Did you make 'em drink out of the hose?"

If I were to speak on the subject today, I would speak about FLY Lady. I would recommend her books and her website. I would share what putting her routines into practice has done for me. But, we have 8 whole long months between now and May 13, 2014. That's enough time to put it all to the test. The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Why present these women with empty hopeful good wishes when I can come instead and say, this is how long it took me to change, this is where I stumbled, this is what I learned, these are the results I experienced.

So, if there is to be a deadline (did I mention May 13, 2014?), there should be a starting point. So we'll mark today as the starting point. From now until then I will give it my best to put FLY Lady's routines into practice. I'll blog along the way so I will have a record of the journey, really more for my own accountability than anything else.

I want to know if ordinary women can really do this. I want to know what difference organization can make. I want to know if it will teach me any valuable life lessons. Basically I want to know, once and for all, if you really can teach an old dog new tricks!
